EEA PRELUDE scenarios launched:
A preview of the Europe of tomorrow

A conference in Brussels, with the presentation of an interactive tool on the Internet, saw the official launch of the PRELUDE scenarios by the European Environment Agency (EEA). PRELUDE stands for Prospective Environmental analysis of Land Use Development in Europe.

This much anticipated launch gave us a sneak preview into how land use in Europe might look in the future. The scenarios resulted from a sophisticated process of interaction between more than thirty stakeholders, EEA experts and modelling scientists and they represent relevant, plausible and challenging future possibilities.

De Ruijter Strategy, together with its partner Prospex in Brussels, supported and facilitated this EEA project.

At the launch conference, Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the EEA, said, “The PRELUDE project is our attempt to go far beyond the perspective of two legislative cycles and explores society and environment 30 years from now. PRELUDE illustrates that the key trends facing Europe can change significantly. We need better integrated, long-term assessments to effectively support strategic decision-making”.

Even before its official launch, PRELUDE had already received a series of awards, including the Clarion Award which recognises best practice in communicating the importance of sustainable development initiatives.
